Wow congrats, you are engaged… all types of things may be fluttering through your head about how your vision is supposed to unfold, what your wedding dress is going to look like, and what kind of flowers will be in your wedding bouquet. Before you get all tangled up in the process, let’s decide on your unforgettable colors.
Here are key things to factor in when deciding your colors…
VENUE
Yes, I know, you may have not even chosen a venue yet, but that is completely okay. Be flexible with your color palette because your venue may sway you a specific direction. Although carpet SHOULD NOT be a deciding factor when choosing your wedding colors because your eye never looks to the ground in a reception (thank heavens), you should consider the surroundings of the property, the color of the walls, any drapery or artwork in the venue that can’t be removed, and/or even the color the lighting may give off from the chandelier, sometimes it’s more white, sometimes it’s more amber.
You may also consider the linens and chairs – if you are using the house linens and chairs from the venue, ask to see the colors to help you decide yours. And again, if you haven’t chosen a wedding venue, and you are choosing colors first, make sure you have room to be flexible with color changes or movement.
SEASON
The time of year should also be a factor in choosing color schematics. Summer colors are bright, playful, energetic. Spring colors are soft, romantic, fruitful. Winter colors are warm, rich, captivating. Now this does not mean you have to follow this guideline, but it gives you a nice start when choosing your palette. If you use the guideline you can play off nature, which really helps bring your wedding concept together.
PLAY WITH COLOR
Don’t limit yourself to certain colors you love ONLY, play with color and families of color. You can do this at any home improvement store by going into the paint swatch department, or going to a fabric store and picking out swatches and mixing and matching colors together. MOOD
If you are wanting to create a certain feeling for your wedding, color is a great way to determine that mood. Colors evoke all type of senses – blue is calming, green is soothing, red evokes sensuality, while yellow gives a feeling of happiness. Colors can be very emotional, so think about the feeling you want to convey because color will in essence effect the way your guests taste, touch, smell, see, and again… feel.
OTHERS…
Other things that you should think about when choosing your wedding colors
Your Wedding Party – the majority of your color schematic will be identifiable immediately at your wedding ceremony with your Bridesmaids & Groomsmen. They will be sporting your colors whether it be in the girl’s dresses, their bouquets, the guy’s ties or even their shoes, shirts, or cuff links.
Your Flowers - your flowers will be the decor standing out in your ceremony and reception, so when picking colors consider flowers that are in season in those colors. Take a look and see if you like them, if they are out of season, they are harder to get, sometimes they don’t look at perfect, and the cost of flowers will be high. So check out the colors that are in season around your wedding date.
The Groom – always have to throw this one in, sometimes the Groom is forgotten with the color choices. Ladies that love pinks, peaches, and purples, make sure your man is okay with it too. After all, this day is as much about him as it is you. So pick colors that resemble the both of you, it makes for a more personalized event anyway!
